I’m Derek Simpson, a Southern California-based game programmer and a student at UC Santa Cruz, where I’m studying Computer Science: Game Design. I love exploring technical and creative experimentation, regularly participating in game jams and small projects that push the boundaries of my skills. From solving complex programming problems to mastering game engines and tinkering with unique hardware, I’m always eager to learn and grow. I’m passionate about video games and esports, with professional experience in both industries. Recently have gained an interesting in computer networking and back-end development practices. Alongside my studies, I aim to inspire others to pursue game development, sharing my knowledge through mentorship, talks, and collaboration.
I've been passionate about video games for over 13 years, beginning with the classics like Super Mario Bros. when I was 7. Today, I dive into immersive worlds like World of Warcraft, Valorant, League of Legends, and Overwatch, as well as exciting new titles like Ashes of Creation and Deadlock. Beyond playing, I love analyzing the mechanics and strategies of the games, which continually inspire my own game programming projects.
Outside of gaming, I stay active through volleyball, which keeps me both healthy and grounded. Cooking is another passion of mine — I love creating aesthetically pleasing dishes and have even dedicated an Instagram page to showcasing my culinary creations. Additionally, I’m a huge Esports fan and enjoy following the competitive scene, supporting both teams and players.
